Tips for Chapter Advisors

Advisors are an important resource to our collegiate chapters and Greek community!

1. Develop clear expectations with chapter officers, outlining your role and commitment to the chapter.

2. Review advisory resources provided by the fraternity or sorority headquarters and the Georgia Tech Office of Student Involvement.

3. An advisor should be present at chapter meetings, new member events, initiation, and executive officer meetings.

4. Request copies of minutes from chapter meetings, executive board meetings, judicial hearings.

5. Utilize a full advisory board -- follow your fraternity or sorority headquarters’ guidelines.

6. Review manuals on a yearly basis.

7. Review the new member program with the new member educator each semester. It is important to comply with guidelines set by the fraternity or sorority headquarters.

8. Officer transition is critical. Encourage effective note taking and filing in order to pass along to future chapter leaders. Help officers during the election process and work with officers to effectively transition incoming officers.

9. Leadership conferences can be effective and beneficial for your leaders. Look into leadership development opportunities, such as IMPACT, UIFI, LeaderShape, etc. Many sorority and fraternity headquarters have scholarships available – encourage your chapter to pursue these opportunities!

10. You are not alone! Please ask for help from the Office of Greek Affairs and your fraternity or sorority headquarters.

Thank you to Arizona State University for great ideas for advisors.
